There are 2 issues with the reciever/drier in your system beyond performance. Number one is the mineral oil which was in your r12 system. A lot of that oil can get trapped in the receiver/drier, which is not flushed in the conversion. If your compressor blew and oil went everywhere, then I wouldn't worry about it because the oil found it's own way out. Otherwise, there's still mineral oil in there. Now, mineral oil is not supposed to be carried by r134a, and if it's in the receiver/drier, it should stay there. But...you never really know, and you don't want a large deposit of mineral oil in your new compressor.
The other issue is the dessicant. Which I think is a non-issue. Receiver/driers for r12 used to use a form of charcoal, which when mixed with r134a, produce catostrophic failure. However, Saab went r134a in 1993 using what I think is the same receiver/drier in your car. So, I would say the odds are you have a dessicant which is compatible with r134a.
If it were me, and the shop was willing to change the receiver/drier at no charge, I would do it. I got that style receiver/drier from Sobstory for $45 a couple of months ago. Of course, it was cold out when I bought it, and ac part prices rise with temperature.
