This does not sound good but as a possibility check the condition of the teeth on the speedo sensor gear. If they look something like a filled-in "A", they are probably OK. If on the other hand, they have a knife-edge look more closely at each gear and see if they are identical in size. If this is the problem, you should find a tooth or two shorter than the others. Apparently it does not take much as my gear only had one tooth wiped and an adjacent one about half gone. For the $10 USD that it takes for a new gear, might be worth the shot just to replace it and see if that works.

Now if all that looks OK, the only other possibility is that you have a split spiral gear on the right side output shaft and that requires a transmission tear down to replace the $20 USD gear. Stupid design but that's the way it is. I'm betting your drive gear is wiped on a couple of teeth and is an easy fix. Hope the positive waves work and good luck.
