I had TCS on my '90 2.3CDT. This was one of the first to have TCS (it was originally a demonstrator for the '91 model year) and I would expect teething problems with it. However, I only had one fault, and not involving an expensive part: the pedal pot started to foul in its plastic housing and sometimes didn't return to zero when stopping, causing "limp-home mode". The dealer diagnosed this (the fault codes were very explicit, apparently) and applied the official Saab modification (re-shape the housing with a heat gun!). No more faults. Apparently this was a common problem on the very earliest TCS cars. I haven't heard of anyone else seeing this problem, so it must have been corrected quite early on, before '92 when TCS hit the US. Certainly, I would not expect to see it on a '93 car.

I didn't like the traction control at the time, but I realise now that it was because I was having traction problems in general. The TCS used to take over and reduce power at the most disconcerting of moments, such as when overtaking, simply because I didn't have enough grip. The tyres I was using weren't nearly grippy enough for such a powerful car and I'm sure the suspension could have done with some attention (and the CD suspension is softer, giving more scope for the front to lift under acceleration). With good tyres and suspension in decent order, my Aero does have enough grip not to want to spin the wheels in the dry (except in 1st gear). Now I know that much traction is possible, I wouldn't dismiss a TCS 9000.

An independent Saab mechanic would be a good idea, and might be cheaper than the AA.

Saab do operate their own insurance scheme in the UK. I don't know what their pricing is like, but I'm sure a dealer can tell you more. I seem to remember it wasn't competitive enough in my case. For a few quid, you can join the UK Saab Owner's Club, and they have special insurance arrangements too. Again, I don't know what the rates are like, but I joined a few days ago and intend to find out.
