What has worked for me is a point between the mfr's recommendation and the max pressure written on the tire. I start with the lower pressure and work up until the ride is still acceptable, but never higher than the max figure.
My specs (FS SZ50) are 36 and 44psi, respectively, and I have settled on 40/37 (front/rear). This has worked well for me over the years, never observing any accelerated center-tread wear. Using higher pressures will help handling, especially transient maneuvers--up to a point. If pressure causes the footprint to favor the center of the tread, wear at that point can be accelerated and handling will suffer. I use more in front to decrease understeer, but this is a delicate balance, as you don't want any oversteer behavior to creep in, as this is inherently dangerous.
