Inner Tripod Bearing Reinstallation Frustration

This morning's bright idea was to change the boot on the right inner driver on my 91 T, a/t before work. I should have known better after hitting myself in the face with a crowbar yesterday morning removing a ball joint on my other 9000.
I got the driveshaft out in about 6 minutes, and that was without air tools. Then....the inner tripod bearing would NOT come off the driveshaft. I ended up slowly bangning it off with a hammer, being very careful not to hit any of the roller bearings. With time running out, I cleaned the splines on the driveshaft and the grooves in the inner driver to ease reinstallation. Of course, the inner driver would not go back on the driveshaft. I hit the center part of the bearing with a hammer and got it most of the way on, but it would not go onto the shaft far enough to get the snap ring back on. And time ran out.
So, now I am thinking that I could use a socket or a piece of metal pipe with a slightly larger diameter to bang the bearing piece back on. However, to do that, I will need to put the driveshaft in a vise. I am concerned about putting the driveshaft in a vise out of fear that it will bend the driveshaft enough to induce vibration.
Anyone done this? Any bright ideas? Any possibly bright ideas?
