You did not mention if the transmission is automatic or manual. I have some experience with the automatic and none with the 9K manual (although some with the OG900, but that's another BB).
The only ball bearings in the ZF 4HP-18 automatic are those outboard units associated with the axle drives. The rest are caged roller bearings. If the seal that was leaking was around the driver or stub axle on the RH side, the ball bearings that fell out can be replaced with new ball bearing assemblies without having to pull the transmission out of the car. This is true for both sides of the transmission.
There are certainly caveats around how much time and money should be spent on a 272K car, but if the transmission can be repaired for a couple of hundred dollars, you might get a decent return on your investment. Before making any decision, it would be a good idea to have the shop pull the drain plug and see if any metal is attached to the magnet. If so, a used or rebuilt tranny may be your only reasonable option.
