I have an 87 turbo that I fitted koni shocks and eibach springs
to. the turbo springs are 10 - 15mm lower than std and the eibach
springs have lowered the car another 20mm.
my std shocks were stuffed so its hard to compare but the adjustability
of the koni's means you'll be able to adjust the damping to your liking.
You can stiffen em up as the oil goes off and they're rebuildable too.
the lower stiffer springs have improved the cornering heaps I no longer
feel like the car is going to roll over during hard cornering. lowering the car also gave me 1.5 deg neg camber on the front wheels which also helps.
the springs were progressive wound and with the konis have not made the cars ride much rougher. (dont wind up the dampng rates too far or you will think the car has no suspension). it does scrub the tyre on real tight turns over bumps.
I did the job myself, the shocks had good instructions with them. but it is not a job for a novice. before you buy the front inserts make sure the front struts have not been changed for aftermarket ones as the konis will only fit the saab struts. - consult with the suspension place you buy them from. you will probably want to have new bump stop rubbers on hand especialy if you have a crook shock. you will need a couple of good long spring compressors to change the springs. the rear shocks aren't too bad its a matter of pulling them out and chaanging over the bump stops covers ect.you will have to leave them off to change the springs. in order to drop the rear axle far enough to get the springs out even with the compressors on I had to pull the rear calipers off and disconnect the panhard rod. it was a bugger as i could only fit one compressor on each rear spring.(no room for two).
the front struts came out easy( undo the pinch bolt and leave the stub axle assy behind) and came apart easy too. oh you may need the rubber seats that go under the springs. you have to remove the spring drill a hole in the strut to let the gas pressure out and then cut a 2-3mm groove around the top of the strut with a hacksaw. you pull out the old guts (use a bucket to catch the oil not the floor like me) clean it up drill a 14mm hole in the bottom of the tube for the retainer bolt, clean up the tube and slip in the new koni insert, bolt it and reassemble it with the new spring of choice. when you put the insert in you may need to use a small collar which the kit supplies, it is all in the instructions anyway. all that is left is to put the sexy "koni equipped" sticker on. took me about 4-5 hours
