Auto / 5-speed difference Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Why do you want to disable it?, mario, Mon, 20 May 2002 23:39:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The automatic uses a different method of TCS than the 5-speed. Both are 'drive-by-wire' - the gas pedal connects to a sensor that sends information to the controller, and the controller drives a servo mounted on the throttle that opens and closes the butterfly. In the case of the 5-speed, there is a backup conventional cable, not so in the automatic.
In manual tranny cars, TCS limits wheel slip by a combination of cutting back on the throttle and applying the brakes through the ABS system. In automatic cars, wheel spin is limited only by throttle cut back.
There is a kit to add the 'Off' switch to the TCS for the model years 1992-1994, manual transmission. I'm going to have to check my records to see if it is available for the automatic - I can't remember. For a '92, you need to get the controller from a '93 or '94 - even used, that can be an expensive solution.
Since you've shown an interest in modifications, I'd go with a new throttle body. Actually, a used throttle body with a good-old mechanical throttle, wired up to a good old mechanical gas pedal. You should be able to get one out of a junker with no problem. That would be the ideal situation - no TCS to worry about, a nice, direct linkage, and you could take the opportunity to make sure the throttle body is polished for nice airflow. Heck, there may be performance throttle bodies out there.
I'd also recommend thinking about that manual conversion. The automatic tranny is a weak point in the 9000, and adding horsepower isn't going to increase the longevity any.
Good luck!
