Were you using the decal on the bottom of the glove box to locate the (#26)relay? The 87 horn relay is where the 88 fan relay should be. the 88 horn relay (I know mine is) is in the box under the hood. Is it possible someone put a 87 glove box in and the in car picture is wrong? The 87 fan relay is mounted on the right side of the relay panel, not the top like all the others.
The thermo switch in a 88 should be a 2 wire switch located on the left side of the radiator. Its inline between the relay and fan motor.
The relay is a time delay type to limit running of the fan after shutdown.
