I have recently rebuilt a non-turbo 4HP-18 that was originally mated to a '91 2.3L for my '90 2.0L turbo. In addition to the external vacuum hose your guy told you about, the final gear ratio is different, the numbers of clutch disks on several of the clutches are different, and the governor settings are different for different shift points. The valve bodies are the same except for a modification to accomodate the turbo pressure tube for the 1-2-3 upshift valve, but there are differences in the valve restrictors and possibly the valve spring tensions (I haven't tracked this last one down completely yet).

Bottom line, the non-turbo tranny will bolt up to the earlier turbo engine, but internally the transmission is lighter duty, geared lower, and has different shift points for the different torque curves of the two engines. These are very important to the drivability of the car.
