You are quite correct that the DI and plugs do not have anywhere near as hard a time in a normally-aspirated engine. In fact others (Quasi, etc.) have taken issue with my recommendation for changing the plugs so frequently, and I respect the opinions of all of you. However, what I'm saying is that changing the plugs frequently cannot do any harm, and at only a few quid (and almost as few bucks or euros, but considerably more Dan. Kr. :) ) for a set, it's not even worth thinking about. It also helps me remember which services I need to buy plus for - all of them.
The only thing I am adamant about is that neglecting the plugs or fitting the wrong ones will cause trouble, but unless plugs are difficult or expensive to get locally, it's just as easy to change them when re-gapping, and the plugs on my Aero do need re-gapping within 12,000 miles. I have foound that gapping them to an initial 0.9mm to extend the re-gapping interval causes loss of performance at low RPM in my particular car, so lately I have started to gap at the recommended 1.1mm and re-check frequently as I'm still a bit paranoid about having too wide a gap.

There are definitely advantages to having a non-turbo 9000. Incidentally, I drove one the other day for the first time ever (a 2.0i). Quite different to drive until I got used to it, then rather fun. Of course, it did help substantially that it belonged to Ed Abbott (of Abbott Racing) so you can imagine what it was like to toss around the bends in the country lanes...
