What has been reported here over the last couple of years is an increasing number of failures in 91-92 balance chain crankshaft sprockets. I replaced mine (91T) because of these reports and I am glad that I did. Newer cars have not been reported here as having that problem.
HOWEVER, it seems that while fixing one problem, Saab may have created another. Apparently, sometime after 91-92 (and definitely by the motor change in 94), Saab went to plastic chain guides and a different intake and exhaust (balance chain) sprockets. Townsend has said, and I can't remember if it's on their site or was posted here, that overheating the motor can melt the plastic chain guides. The plastic pieces then break off and clog the oil passages in the motor. Which can lead to early motor replacement. There have also been increasing reports here of post 92 cars having the teeth on the intake and exhaust sprockets wear completely off. When I did my car, the chain guides and intake and exhaust sprockets showed little or no wear.
