The fact is 88 is a 2.0l and the gear ratio will be shorter.
But yes it will hook up fine, i had 86 9000 tranny in my 90
now i have a 92 tranny in it.
Basically the same outside, internally not.
I believe you will have to cut the wires to your speedo and splice them back together on an 88 though, Because if I'm not mistaking the 88's speedgear on the tranny doesn't like to match the new ones.....Splicing works fine i did it on mine.
