Engine temperature is a lot higher in the summer. Don't be fooled by the thermostat setpoint. The purpose of the thermostat is too allow the engine to warm up quickly after starting. It cannot regulate the engine temperature. All it does is pop open at a set temperature. It is not a modulating valve such as you would find in a temperature control loop.

In the summer, the coolant runs hotter than during the winter at the same engine load. Because the air temperature is higher, the radiator cannot reject the same duty of heat during the summer that it can during the winter. So the net result is that everything is hotter at steady state operating condition- coolant temperature, oil temperature, engine block, etc. A lot hotter.
