Thanks for the suggestions.
The sound comes on when the engine is not loaded. In other words, if I'm coasting down a slight incline, not really accelerating or decelerating but still in a higher gear. As soon as I use the engine for compression or acceleration, the sound goes away.
In response to the advance, I had the distributor replaced w/ another used one, then did a rebuild on it about 2 years ago. No change to the "clatter."
The new timing chain has about 70k on it. I had it done at Scanwest in Seattle, and the mechanic was aware of the noise. He even suggested that this might take care of it, or at least rule out one more possibility. Guess the latter is true eh?
Anyway, I don't think it's gonna blow up or anything. I wouldn't even care, except that I've been trying to get more performance and this has become the wall. When I advance the timing to spec, the motor does perform well, but it sounds like it's gonna rattle apart.
My best guess is that the valve train is making noise. Sounds like it's coming from the #1 (or is it #4?) cylinder closest to the timing chain. I just don't know what to look for in there.
Thanks for the suggestions. Keep em comin!
