For troubleshooting base boost, it doesn't matter what turbo you have.
Since you get full boost unhooking the W line, the turbo is OK. The knock sensor is pretty sensitive - it will detect knock before you hear it. If you're hearing knock, then the APC is kicking in.
Do the simple stuff first - if you're not already running premium (high octane) fuel, run a full tank of it. Second - check your ignition timing. Too advanced, and the engine will knock. Check your spark plugs - if they're old and worn, replace them - worn plugs can cause knock. Check for vacuum leaks - vacuum leaks cause hot running and knock.
Once you're ruled out knock, then we can go to the next step.
