'93 9000 transmission troubles... why and how serious?

My friend has a 93 9000cse auto with approx. 80,000 miles on it. In last six weeks he has noticed a transmission whine that changes with rpm, but it is most noticeable at idle. The noise has gradually gotten more noticeable. He recently had the transmission serviced by our local dealer, and there were some metal shavings in the screen and transmission was dark. In addition, approx. 2 1/2 inches of the plastic end of the transmission dip stick had brokened off.
Aside from the whine, the transmission seems fine...there is no apparent slippage, and the upshifts and downshifts are smooth and properly timed.
My '97 9000CSE 2.3 developed a similar but louder whine at 140,000 miles. The local dealer replaced the "transmission pump" for approx. $1,000 and that seems to have solved the problem.
Questions:
Is that pump the only reason for that kind of "whine"?
Are there any disadvantages to waiting for other symptoms to develop? (If it is the pump, can waiting to replace it lead to other damage?)
Has anyone else lost the end of their transmission dipstick? Could that have led to this problem?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
