Strange noises after replacing CV joint

over the weekend I replaced the outer and inner driver's side CV joint on my 88 9kT (I was getting the classic "click, click" noise on tight turns that implies a failing CV joint).
The clicking noise is gone but there is something in its place. At highway speeds everything seems fine when driving straight ahead or turning right, but when turning left (even just moving the steering wheel a miniscule amount) I get a sort of "cccchhhhhh" noise - really hard to describe but a rubbing/grating noise. Everything looks OK - the brakes don't seem to be rubbing, the tires look OK - the fact that I have to move the steering wheel to the left makes me pretty sure it must be something to do with the CV joint. I guess my next step is to take it all apart, clean it and repack it - unless somebody has any alternative theories before I try that?
By the way, it's a 5 speed if that makes a difference.
