based on your descriptions....methinks you're fine...I do think a trans service will probably eliminate the whine, and if not, ease your mind. Power steering can be pretty noisy when cold, a flush and a change on that wouldn't hurt.
I'm not going to accuse you of hearing things, but what you described is pretty normal...takes a little while for a car to get warmed up and everything up to pressure. The trans and P/S fluids are a LOT thinner when up to temp, and with some mileage, it's not considered unusual for them to groan a little when they're waking up. I know i sure do :P
