I have a noise that sounds like knobby snow tires coming from the front end. I know it's not my tires - Yesterday I put the front end on jack stands, removed the wheels, and engaged the tranny in fifth. At the equivalent of 50mph, the noise was present and identical to the one I hear on the road.

From down by the wheel well, it seemed like the noise was coming from further in on the driveshaft, not from either CV joint. I was also able to drive each wheel individually by jamming one side with a screwdriver which causes the other side to spin quite a bit faster (one time where I was glad to have an open differential!) and the noise was definitely coming from the right side drive shaft.

I'm assuming that the problem is the right side inner driver. I also get the occasional requisite sharp "click" during a load shift which would indicate a bad bearing.

I'm just looking for suggestions or ideas.

I am going to replace my clutch release bearing soon, so I will have to take off at least one driveshaft anyway. It looks like I'm headed for a major "all in one" front end job. Fun!
