AC clutch "judder", cycle frequency

-94 CSE with ACC (R134a). The ac compressor clutch does not sound like all my other cars (have). It sounds like a "judder", it takes a bit too long to engage. I guess the Sanden compressor on my Cherokee is basically the same, just the "head" is different. The clutch on the Jeep engages like snap, it just starts running. On the Saab it kinda slips for a fraction of a second and makes a juddering sound. Wrong clearances?
In addition, the cycle frequency feels kinda high to me. The compressor engages and disengages fairly rapidly back and forth. I haven't timed it but it feels short. The air is super cool though, but I thought I might get it topped up, as it's never been serviced.
Any comments will be appreciated.
