Hi there,

suffering from the SAAB virus since I was 12, I enjoy this site and especially this BB. Every now and then I lurk around these postings to see if someone is dealing with the same problem that I have with my beloved 1985 9000T. Yeah, I'm sorry but in Europe (Holland as a matter of fact) we were able to drive these neat machines just a little year earlier! In fact since it is from oktober 1985 the specs are those of the '86 modelyear.

Well as far as the car is concerned no real big problems are present despite the nearly 2000 Kmiles it ran. The first owner that I obtained it from must have it treated it better than his wife I suppose, because of the very low amount of rust (Dutch climate sucks!) and good condition of the paintwork. Technically some 9000 weaknesses had to be fixed as the leaky clutch mastercilinder and rotten mufflerparts, but hey, the car cost me only some 300 bucks!

There is just one little thingy that ruines my sleep at night (although a damn mosquito did the same last night *@$*%, sorry other story) When I drive the car with the RPM between 2000-3000 and throttle lightly pressed it starts to buck. Sometimes significantly noticeable, sometimes just mild, sometimes hardly noticable, but always there. Otherwise, when revving up quickly i.e. with throttle to the floor no buck of bump is noticable. Although when kicking the throttle some hesitation and shuddering or a large nearby stall is noticable, as if the engine chokes in the extra air that is supplied. These symptons are especially present when the engine is warm, when cold the car doesn't drive bad at all.

I already had the spark plugs changed for the correct NGK's with the right gap distance, as the distributorcap (yeah pre-DI) and cables, but no effect. After this job, my suspicion rose to the fuel suply and had the fuel filter changed. The car got a little more vivid but bucking remained. After the new plugs had run some 3K miles I examined them and they showed the typical lean mixture symptons: Very white isolator and nearly no deposits. I checked for vacuum leaks but no result however. This day I did a second check on vacuum leaks with the lighter gas method but that indicated nothing particularly wrong, Turbo gauge is in the first third of the green area, so I don't suppose a real vacuum leak would be the issue. However, I continued my survey and took the vacuumline from the FPR(fuel pressure regulator), blocked it to remain the vacuum and noticed a considerable different behaviour of the engine. With the line attached the engine didn't idle as smoothly as it did without and with the line detached the hesitation and roughness that I mentioned when revving up had dissappeared.
Could this indicate a faulty FPR or am I just fooling myself (well the the 'blowjob';-) method didn't reveal a leaky FPR)? Does anybody have any clues what to look for otherwise? Perhaps an underperforming fuel pump? Maybe a messed up throttleswitch? Oh I nearly forgot to mention this, the engine runs very rough when the AMM cable is disconnected, nearly no power and an idle that alternates between 800-1400 RPM, can a faulty AIC cause this behavior as well?
Can someone tell me if I am getting any warmer here, so that I can ruin my nights with chasing mosquitos only or am I way off and have to surrender, i.e. have the SAAB guys check it.

TIA,

Dutchie9000T
