Anders is right that fossil oil was used from the factory. As for determining what you have, the Saab synthetic is red when new, and mine was a brownish red when I drained it a few weeks ago. There's no mistaking the odor, though, like nothing I could describe: A bad, very unusual chemical smell is the best I can do to describe it.
If you're the original owner you can rest assured it has fossil oil installed, but if not it could be anything. If it isn't fossil oil or Saab synthetic it'd be in your best interest to change it, as some are not compatible with this transaxle. If you change to Saab synthetic you'll need to follow the instructions in TSB 471-1742 (see link below for instruction sheet). I've used it for two years and have had no trouble. Saab claims better bearing life and other friction reduction, and it is $13+/qt. requiring two quarts. Shop around and you may be able to get it for ~$11-12.
