If it is just you involved in the accident you don't need a police report. ALso like gerald s. said and I learned if the car is older the insurance company will total it. If this is the case it might be better not to file an insurance claim and have it fixed yourself if feasible. Even $1500-$2000 in damage out of pocket can be better than a $500 deductible and a payout on your record.
I had an '89 legend that I totally due to wheather, hydroplaned on the highway , one person accident. Could have fixed the car for $1000 instead I filed a claim, car was totalled, I lost $4000 in one year in value, and I got kicked out of the perferred insurance group. My insurance increase alone would have justified not filing the claim.
Does the car engine run. If it seems to be working fine and the engine compartment appears undamaged, then you may just have body work damage which can cost you, but not nearly what mechanical damage will. The best thing to do is have the damage appraised by a body shop and then decide. But remember any payout by your insurance company for what ever the reason will affect your insurance somewhere down the road.
