the ZF box is really very controllable if you want to change it by adjusting the throttle opening/position. Changing gear with the lever is fine when going down, but I don't like the lack of a detent to stop you going straight from third into neutral without stopping in "drive". I also like to stick the thing in third when attacking bendy country roads (like the ones here in Somerset, UK) and roundabouts, to avoid unwanted upshifts.
Top gear is pretty economical on fuel, but town is pretty disastrous on my '93 CSE: engine improvements should make this better on later cars but the reports I see on this board vary so much that it's hard to say, and driving style affects consumption too. I regret to say that my wife gets better mileage from the car than I do, and she doesn't hang about.
Since having my transmission rebuilt the other week (yes, the cost hurt, but the car wasn't moving!) it seems slower to change down but I'm reasonably happy with this situation if it preserves my transmission. I plan to do a few thousand miles then take it in for adjustment.
Opinion varies on whether automatic gearboxes improved with model year. I have an idea the output shaft got beefed up but believe it's the same basic unit throughout. I would love a '97 car and will get one next time!
Finally, although the automatic is slower, it still gives its best performance every time and the reason for slow acceleration times often lies in the gear-changes rather than the bits in between.
