Don't want to spend $50 on a used one? Go to a different junkyard and spend $10! You'll find the price on this type of thing varies tremendously from one place to the next.
Basically you've got 4 options (assuming you don't want to go out and spend $$ on some type of aftermarket boost controller):
1) Replace the APC valve - safest and easiest solution
2) Leave the wastegate disconnected - obviously not a good idea. Excessive boost will destroy your engine for sure.
3) Connect the wastegate directly to the port on the compressor housing. This will give base boost. Not the "more power" you're looking for, but better than nothing.
4) This is really lame and you have to be careful doing it, but I've done this and it works. Get 2 needle valves, the kind used to control the air for fish tanks, from a pet shop. Connect them together with a "t" fitting in the middle. Hook them in place of the APC valve, with one valve connecting to the compressor housing, the other connecting to the hose that goes to the turbo intake, and the 3rd leg of the "t" going to the wastegate. Open the valve going to the compressor housing about 2 turns, and close the other valve. Now test drive the car and try opening the closed valve about 1/2 turn at a time - you'll see the boost increase. Congratulations, you've just built yourself a $10 manual boost controller! Only problem is, instead of the APC, the responsibility is now on *your* shoulders to keep the engine from knocking and destroying itself. If you're careful and conservative, it can work out well. If you crank it up too much, you'll end up with a hole in a piston!
