I did the head gasket on my '89 9Ks last winter. Now, first thing is, no turbo, lots more room to work. But, with the good write-ups available, I was able to do it with a modicum of trouble in 10 hours or so. I thought it was much worse putting it back together, mostly because I didn't have a helper to help seat the head and hold the timing chain out of the way. The way I always look at it is if I don't have to do any more than anyone else did (via write-ups), I'm doing well.
As to accessability, I will say the 900s were much better than the 9000s. I always thought that they were very well suited to DIYers, probably because they evolved from rally cars and 9000s did not.
All that said, when I got married, my dad gave me his V6 Fiero (his midlife crisis car). Fast, fun, etc., but you want to talk about a bugger to work on?!?! I had to remove the entire rear suspension to fix a squeaky A/C belt!!! WHAT A PITA!!! I was glad to sell it.
I love my 9000 comparitively
