Think of a cars coolant system as being split in half with the thermosatat in the middle. The two halves are the radiator side and the block side. When you start your car the thermostat is cold and is closed. This traps the cooling water in the block so your engine can warm up faster. When the thermostat reaches it's operating temp it opens and allows flow with the radiator water. Now you have one big cooloing loop. Thermostat malfunctions can occur. If it is stuck closed it never oipens and your coolant can't be cooled so your car over heats a few minutes after being started. If it is stuck open it will take forever and a day for the car to warm up. This effects performance, oil viscosity and cabin temp when heat is used.
