Yes. This is something you can do yourself. Same thing happened to my 96 Aero. Might be difficult to get at from the top(try from underneath, using all safety measures). Sensor is located on top and to the back and inside on the transmission. I believe a 12mm wrench loosens the nut(to the side of sensor) allowing the sensor to be pulled straight up and out. Inspect gear for damage and replace if needed. If not the gear, replace it anyway(they do wear). Good luck...
