Acess to the tensioner is blocked by the upper motor mount bracket, where the bracket screws into the head. The tesioner is exactly in line with the timing chain on the back of the head, close to where the head meets the block. The body of the tensioner requires a fairly large deep socket to remove (approx 25-28mm ??).
You can also release the tension on the chain BEFORE removing the tensioner by removing one or both camshaft sprockets.
There are a few items which you should absolutely replace, in addition to the head-gasket, because they are inexpensive parts and replacing them does not add any significant labor once the timing cover has been removed -these are:
Main crankshaft oil seal.
Oil pump o-ring.
Left and right timing chain guide rails.
Left and upper balance chain guide rails.
Be sure to very carefully inspect all of the balance shaft/chain components and replace anything with signs of significant wear.
Good Luck!
