The orginal 99 motor of either 1700 and 1854cc size was jointly developed by Triumph and SAAB for use in the Dolomite and 99 respectively. Interesting, Triumph twinned their version into the V-8 used in the Stag. Different block and crank obviously, but identical bore centers, etc to allow for a common manufacturing process. Pistons, rods, heads, valves, etc were all common to both the 4s and 8s.

I had a '72 99E with the 1854cc motor and frankly it was horrible. The alloy used in the head corroded rapidly due to galvanic action with the iron block creating massive pits that would reach the combustion chambers in less than 100K miles even when good quality antifreeze was used. They also had this funky angled head bolt arrangement that made head removal difficult, especially when added to the fact the the head bolts would also corroded (and weld) themselves to the head usually creating a situation that you had to cut the bolts to get the head off. Then there was the transmission that used a gear train from the clutch shaft to the gearbox that would strip gears on any kind of extreme load (like hitting an ice patch at speed). They went to a triplex chain drive in '73 and the problem was eliminated. But the old 99 bodies were well-built (funky colours though) and would last forever.
