Yes, that's what he meant. It might be a good idea to replace it before it explodes its guts throughout your system.
However, if the problem is just noise, and you have had a leak issue in the past, then adding oil may significantly quiet the compressor. Note that the correct oil must be added. In an r12 system, add mineral oil (ester works with r12, but if the system has mineral aviod mixing them), in a factory r134a add PAG (absoultely don't add ester to a factory PAG system...bad, bad idea...ask how I know), and in a r134a conversion, add whatever was used (typically ester). Look for the label in the engine compartment to tell you what's in there. There is a factory label, and if a conversion, there should be an additional blue label.
