Cabin air filter: Clean, gut, or get ripped?

Well, the AC on my '95 Aero hasn't been cooling well lately, so I put the gauges on it. Diagnosis: normal, but it still wasn't cooling, so I punted and consulted the service manual. One troubleshooting suggestion within being to check the cabin air filter, so I removed the filthy, 35k-mile veteran and tried it without a filter. All was suddenly cool and collected again.
Now, out of curiosity, since air was blowing into the cabin quite well with the dirty filter in place, where was it coming from? Is there a bypass that works when the filter is clogged? I would think that if the filter is clogged, the air flow would be diminshed, which it wasn't in any measurable quantity.
The more pressing questions are (1) can I clean this filter, and (2) can I replace the element with some custom-cut media from Home Depot, like I did with the older style filters (e.g., '86 and '91)? Doing a TSN search, one person claimed they washed the old filter, so is recycling an effective method here? Looking at this filter, it is different from my '91, which could be gutted and refurbished by filter media from the hardware store. This one looks like it couldn't be done easily, maybe by caulking the media in after cutting the old out. It might be more trouble than the cost of a new one.
But, I'm clearly not excited about paying $25-40 for $3 worth of air filter media. Since the old filter is useless as is, I'm going to try cleaning it and see what kind of creative suggestions I get from the group.
