What kind of nasty sound?
Starters tend to make grinding type noises. But before you assume you need a new starter, do the simple stuff and make sure it's bolted in tight. I've seen cases where the starter bolts back out a little, and the resulting misalignment makes for some interesting noises, especially on engage/disengage.
There are other noisemakers - the Harmonic balancer comes to mind. That's the main pulley, just with a fancy name. It's made up of an inner and outer metal pulley, with a rubber middle. If the rubber cracks over time, you'll get a short squeal at startup as the rubber spins for a bit. The squeal starts out short, but gets longer over time. The solution is to replace the pulley. If you don't, it can do engine damage. It's not too hard to check - take a piece of chalk and draw it across the face of the pulley. Then start the car a few times (cold is best), and look at the line (a mirror helps). If the line is no longer straight, you know the outside has rotated with respect to the inside, and the pulley needs replacement.
Lastly, a worn or loose serpentine belt can make for startup squeals.
Good luck!
