I am going down the same path. My 88 9K turbo went from shifting perfectly to barely able to move in 1st gear. Several thought the problem could be valve body related so the thought of not having to pull the tranny was appealing. I don't know where you live but I have the good fortune (at least in this case) to live in Connecticut. Eriksson Industries (tranny rebuilders) is only an hours drive away. I walked in with my valve body and got it tested. They let me go back into the shop and watch the test and explained everything they bad and what the results should be. They have a machine dedicated to this function. By varying the pressures they can simulate all of the shifts and view pressure results at various points in the valve body. Nat, who seems to be the number 1 man, showed me possible failures outside of the valve body that could produce my symptoms. Unfortunately, my valve body checked out OK but I met some very cordial and knowledgeable people. I would not hesitate to do business with them. When I spoke with them via telephone they listened to my problem and gave me scenarios without trying to sell me anything. I ended up buying a used tranny which still sits in the trunk of the car. Good Luck
