'86 and '87 have very common failures to the high beam circuit inside the steering column switch, due to both high current, and a little plastic cam that is too soft for good longevity. Both problems can be solved - in the case of the current, you can add a relay that takes power directly off the battery/alternator to switch current to the headlights. The cam inside the switch can be removed and rebuilt with some epoxy (or so I have read), or you can get a used or new switch.
As to the brakes, did you lube the caliper slides when you put the new pads in? If not, give them some caliper lube. For the back of the pads, I would recommend some anti-squeal shims instead of lube (though the caliper lube _might_ do some good there, too). These are rubber and are self-adhesive, you can buy them at Napa. Or, at least you could a few years ago..
Another cause of squeal could be glazed pads, which I hear can be cured with use of some sandpaper to rough them up.
