The physical parts of the fuel system are stout, but it's not being told to put in enough fuel. At full throttle the fuel injection operates in "open loop" mode, meaning that the sensors aren't really involved. Thus no matter where you set the boost you'll get the same amount of fuel. 40 more hp definetly necesitates more fuel. It may not back off all the time because it takes a while for the heat from running lean at full throttle to build up (in normal closed loop mode you're fine.) Thus if you hit the gas after normal driving you'll get good boost, but on a hot day, or with prolonged high boost you'll get detonation. Note that running high boost without enough fuel is not good even if you don't get detonation. At any rate, the A/F gauge should give you a better idea what's going on. Where are you located? Maybe you can ask on the board if anyone near you could swap solenoids to see if yours is good.
