There is a rubber coupler in the gear selector that gives this symptom when it starts to split. It is a common problem on the 9000. To confirm, look down on the top of the gearbox and have an assistant move the gear lever from side to side as far as it will go. You will see the coupler moving, and will likely be able to see that the rubber is separating.
A new coupler is not expensive and not hard to fix, although a bit fiddly. An effective short-term fix is to tie it together with plastic tie-wraps (zip-ties) or metal hose clamps. In the long term, you want the proper part to help keep vibration down and also to help crash protection - the rubber part is designed to shear in an accident to prevent the gear lever from being pushed into the passenger compartment. Pity it sometimes shears even when you don't hit something...
