These things are cheap and specifically designed for a minimum number of cycles in a given application. A relay may draw 170 ma which is a couple orders of magnatude less than a cooling fan. The starting current of the fan can easily exceed 30 amps. A switch designed for fan current may very well not keep the nonconductive oxide deposits cleaned off with a current of considerably less than 1 Amp.
