The battery in my Aero failed in an intermittent fashion. I had to jump start it after work one day and took it straight to a battery shop. They tested the battery and proclaimed it healthy. They flatly refused to sell me another battery and made me feel daft for asking.
On the way home, as I braked for a roundabout, the engine stalled momentarily, the dash lighting dimmed and the battery light came on, then it carried on as normal. I was booked into the Saab dealer next day for some other work anyway and had them check the battery. They found a couple of dead cells, replaced the battery and it has been fine since. Of course, it cost almost twice as much from a Saab dealer.
I know that the eventual demise of modern batteries is often due to buildup of sludge at the bottom, which eventually shorts out the plates. This sludge can move around, giving an intermittent short. I believe that's what happened to mine, and perhaps what happened to your cousin's.
I'd recommend having the battery tested.
