I checked the compressor hose, but it looked OK. While looking around the inlet manifold for blown grommets (thanks, Stephen), I found the AIC hose on the inlet side of the throttle body had blown off. The reason appears to have been that while refitting the AIC valve after cleaning a couple of months ago, my mechanical incompetence (and general absent-mindedness) led me to forget to tighten the clip on that hose. The car now goes like a turbocharged rocket, and I'm now seeing the boost gauge clear the end of the red by a substantial amount!
I suspect that hose has been leaking for a while.
I'm going to wash it now, as Bill Davies assures me this will make it go even faster, then get some timings to compare with other peoples' tuned 9000s.
