does the turbo really matter?

My wife's chrysler lebaron is showing its age and will probably need to be replaced soon. I would love to find a 4-6 year old saab for her but they all seem very expensive. This morning in the classifieds I saw a 97 900 with 37K miles for ~$9000 - this of course seemed like an obscenely good deal and I called right away. The car had already been sold but I assume that the price was lower in part because the car was normally aspirated.
I normally drive at or around legaly posted speeds and occasionally exceed them by 15mph - but not that often. While driving at these speeds I the tach is around 3K in 5th gear on my 87 9kT. Would a non-turbo car be capable of the same feat? It seems to me that so long as you're not driving at crazy fast speeds a turbo only proves itself useful in improving a car's accel;eration capabilities.
Am I incorrect in this?
What I really want to know is if a 9000S or a 900S (non-turbo) would be an unbearable dog for normal driving. Is the turbo a luxury or a necessity in these cars? (don't get me wrong, I love the rush and the spoolup)
