Hopefully the easy one first. The noise/crud from the A/C is a sign of a clogged drain. Are you familiar with the filter for the A/C system? It will collect a lot of "interesting" stuff, work its way on down and clog the drains. It builds up and hits the fan. Do a search for drains. I think Quassi's (correct me if I'm wrong people) site has pictures of the drains and how to clean them.
Has the tranny fluid been changed regular?
If not..Change it and have it changed a couple times. The ZF tranny likes fresh fluid. Check the downshift cable for stretch. (is it Townsend that has the instuctions? Again help guys) I change mine with every oil service.
As to the rear tires developing wear,,,,Find a shop that does 4-wheel alignments. The rear axel is not designed to be adjusted,,BUT it can be bent and cause tire wear by the car being supported(jacked) in the middle of the rear axel or running over something hard and having a dent in it. Good news is its easy to replace. The trick there is finding a good straight used one.
The good news is that if your handy with a few good tools everything (except the inside of the tranny) can be fixed or maintained on a low budget.
Welcome to the world of SAAB.
