You can make your own tool using metal pipe, washers and a threaded steel rod, but the problem I ran into with this is that the threaded rod is too soft, and the force required will strip the threads. Sobstory's tool makes it easy to remove the bushing.
However, getting a new one in is a major pain. The Sobstory tool's threaded bolt is too short for this. When trying to press in a new bushing, I found I needed to start the bushing by tapping it in a ways. I laid the assembly on a stout piece of wood, laid a 2 x 4 over the top and hit with a hammer. Then you can push it the rest of the way in using a homemade tool.
An alternative is to buy the "dogbone" with the bushing already installed in the back-most hole, and use polyurethane in the front. The poly bushing is available from Sobstory and comes as two parts, so there's no machine work needed to get it in. Most folks say that having one poly and one rubber bushing isn't too harsh, whereas two poly is. The rubber bushing gets put in the back, where it's easier to change.
