Once I tried those very expensive active carbon filters (some aftermarket stuff from Motonet),,, cost me more than 18 euros per a shot and I didn't notice any difference with my cheap solution:
I my 9000 I have such plastic frame that can be clicked open (frame is about 15 mm thick). Inside it had originally some special fiber "designed" for air conditioning systems + value added by Saab logo,,, ;-)
From household machine service shop I found filter material (kind of rough canvas) that is used in cooker hoods. It can filter almost all the small particles and it should be non-burnable. But still it "breathes" very well.
I cut a suitable piece of that cloth, put in the frame and voila!
Best of all is that this material cost me about 2 euros !!! Size is bigger than family size (say 1 meter x 2 meters) => material lasts for almost a decade.
I'm not sure if my filter is more efficient that "others" but I have noticed that it's good to change it TWICE a year! Oh Yes, every early summer (after the pollen is gone) and late autumn (after the tree leaves etc.) are gone.
One of my other inventions is special Saab tool number 12872396274-0 so that I can vacuum the bottom of the filter housing. My housing is only about 2 cm thick. (Tool is a flattened plastic tube that has adapter made of old oil can plug to connect to the vacuum).
This cheaper way might keep your car even more cleaner,,, one can afford to change the filter twice a year for years... ;-)
Ultimate solution might be the Gore-Text filter,,,
Cheers!
