Its actually kinda funny. I was inside a liquir store using a horribly FAKE ID when I was 19. My jetta was parked in a very little driveway that was next to the store that is in the worst section of Worcester MA. Some drunk decided that he wanted to use the driveway too and my idiot friend let the drunk move MY car. The lobatamized piece of waste (I don't whick one, both I suppose) did not know how to drive standard and must have pushed the stick forward without using the clutch and I suspect without using the H pattern. Anyway, I come out with a 6 pack of BASS to find my jetta's stick shift floating. It turned out he broke the linkage. I suspect its a similar problewm in your car.
BTW you can see the linkage from the top but easiest way is to crawl underneath and look. Most likely the "pin" is missing.
