These figures do look a little low. Again, with my CD (the 2.3T with the same gearing as yours) I'm sure I was seeing over 30 on the motorway with maybe 26-27 around town (depends on the town and the traffic, of course).

If the MPG reading says "Imp" on the display, you are showing imperial MPG, otherwise it's showing US MPG and these figures would translate into 34 MPG motorway and 29 around town, which is good.

Despite all the experience on the board, the only problem I have ever had with an O2 sensor was when I decided to change the one on my Aero simply because I thought it had been in there too long (about 140K miles). Then I found that someone (and I know who) had jammed the sensor in despite damaged threads in the downpipe (second-hand downpipe to replace a smashed one) and in doing so had also rounded off the flats on the sensor. I had to remove the downpipe and apply 100+ lbft to the sensor to get it out, then have the threads tapped out.

After all this, I found no difference in performance with a new sensor. That's not to say a worn-out sensor can't cause bad MPG, but I haven't come across it in my limited experience.

I think you might already have said, but what colour are your plugs? These live in the engine and know the truth, no matter what the O2 sensor is telling the fuel system.

Sounds like your display was showing the accumulated average MPG of you and the previous owner over quite a long period (so the 22mpg sounds like it has been average for some time). I reset mine at every fill-up.

By the way, how many miles has your car again?
