I know that they are not cheap, but I know that there is a fair amount of anecdotal discussion of their failure. Bob Davis had an 'out of blue failure', and I would trust that he would question squealing. If you are taking a long trip with the Saab, how about carrying a spare for luck. Even if you don't have the tools, most mechanics can change.
I've had three 9ks. '87 that I sold with 187,000, '95 with 125k, '95 with 80k. No harmonic failures. However my indie believes that the earlier balancers were weak, and failed early and often. The later ones (including Bob Davis's) are much better. My indie thinks the '87 likely had a new balancer in the 70k before I bought it.
