One additional solution: there are several octane boosters available. I'm not sure if they are street legal in the US or not,,,
Higher octane basically increases the self flammation point of the petrol air mixture. Thus it decreases the knock on engines that have higher pressurisation ratio.
BTW Higher/lower octane has nothing to do with valve lubrication, that is totally another issue. Lead was used for that purpose - nowadays some other (more toxic) stuff is used.
In catalytic cars don't never use leaded petrol! very small amount of leaded petrol indeed kills the cat immediately.
These "octane booster" chemicals are available for example from STP, valvoline etc. etc. Addition might show up with a some increased power or not,,, Typically they are quite expensive (especially with "gained benefits to prize" ratio)
