My '96 CS LPT exhibits similar characteristics. Depending on the "serverity" of the uneven idle, it would appear to me to be:
1) Normal condition as the management system deals with environmental factors (air temp, combustion chamber conditions, etc.)
2) O2 sensor, as you suggest. I did not have codes coming up on mine either, but the replacement of the sensor smoothed the idle considerably.
3) Fuel grade. Here in Ontario, I suspect that the high sulphur content (highest in the G7!) has an affect. Some fill-ups the car idles as smooth as anything; others it runs pretty rough. From my understanding the sulphur can coat the O2 sensor tip especially in slow speed conditions. I'd be interested in hearing from other folks (from Ontario) to see if they are seeing the same thing. In the States, it could possibly be a similar effect caused by ethanol or oxygenation additives.
Anyway, my two cents.
